Third
Party Applications The
Woodmoulding MIS relies heavily on 3rd party applications for enhanced
functionality. Below is an overview of those applications and links
to manufacturer web sites for additional information. Click the
application logos to go to the vendor homepage.

Microsoft Access is one of the best-selling desktop database
of all time; users love the broad range of tools Microsoft Access provides
to enter, analyze, and present data. Microsoft Access 2000 brings not only
the traditional broad range of tools but also adds more productivity
features, database Web document creation, increased integration with SQL
Server,
and a tight office programmability model. See all of the details of
Access 2000 here .
Microsoft Visual Basic development system is the most productive tool
for creating fast business solutions for Windows® and the Web. A
comprehensive, rapid application development environment helps developers
quickly create and deploy client/server applications, plus easily program
for the Internet using familiar Visual Basic programming tools and
techniques.
- Program with the world's most popular programming language to
quickly create high-performance applications and components in a RAD
environment.
- Build fast, native-code applications and components that use the
same world-class compiler technology as in the Microsoft Visual C++®
development system. Applications can be optimized for speed and size,
and in many other ways, to improve performance even more.
- Make your applications and components thread-safe without the rigors
of manual thread management.
- Increase development speed and productivity with IntelliSense®
technology. On-the-fly syntax and statement completion using features
such as Complete Word, Quick Info, and DataTips®.
- Easily create a broad range of COM components, including ActiveX®
controls as well as middle-tier and server-side components.
- Use your Visual Basic skills in the Microsoft Office 97 suite and in
third-party applications that license Microsoft Visual Basic
Applications Edition.
Comparison of Access to VB: (September
1999 By Ron Frank and Oleg Ovanesyan)
Use
Access |
Use
Visual Basic 6 |
For
an application that requires frequent enhancements which must be
turned around quickly, nothing's faster than Access. |
The
project requires coordinated team effort including version control
and component deployment implementation. |
When
the application won't require WAN access, even in front-end/back-end
scenario, the overhead of Jet on the client make a WAN
implementation unreasonable. |
The
app is a distributed client-server or n-tier system that may need to
scale over the enterprise and incorporate latest data access
technologies. |
The
application has many tables with complex relationships. The
ability to declare cascading deletes is still an advantage
over SQL Server 7.0. |
The
back-end may not necessarily be Jet or SQL Server. The
application may already use an existing enterprise DBMS. |
The
intrinsic Access controls, plus supported ActiveX controls provide
an acceptable user interface. |
The
application makes more extensive use of ActiveX controls or creates
User Controls and distributes them. VB has direct access to
.DLL and .OCX libraries. |
The
project is relatively small - the number of VBA objects is limited
to 1000. Access decompiles and GPF's frequently with larger
databases. |
The
project may grow very large. VB6 has no limit to the number of
project components. VB project can't decompile by nature. |
Memory
and disk footprint on client isn't important. Access MDB's can
get quite large. The minimum distributable application is 17MB |
Footprint
and performance are important. Many VB projects require as
little as 2-3MB. Similar projects in Access and VB run faster
in VB. |
It's
sufficient to distribute the application as an .MDB or .MDE
file. It won't be reused as a component of another system. |
The
application must be implementable as a reusable COM component. |
Your
targeted users don't have a bias against Access. Whether true
or not, perception is reality for a commercial product. |
Perception
is important. VB is considered more industrial-strength than
Access. It is actively promoted as a premier development tool
of Visual Studio. |

LLM-WIN32 delivers a sophisticated, yet easy to use Graphical User
Interface (GUI) for designing "out of the box" labeling systems
with no programming required! Our native printer drivers are
designed specifically for each individual printer in order to take
advantage of the printers internal features as well as to maximize
performance. LLM-WIN32 includes four powerful design and printing modules
plus an ActiveX control designed to help you get your labeling system up
